Why did Zidane headbutt Materazzi

Why Zidane headbutted Materazzi

On July 9, 2006 in Germany, Berlin, the World Cup final between France and Italy was being held at Olympiastadion stadium. 7' Zidane scored a goal from a penalty kick, 19' Materazzi's goal assisted by Pirlo. First half ended 1-1 draw and no goals in second half, went to extra time and then the 110th minute… Zidane headbutt Materazzi leading to red card for the French team's star, the rest is known.

I don't know how to describe this incident from the spectators' point of view, bizzare? shocking? What the hell is going on here?

Spectators were watching the two teams heading to extra time to fight for the beautiful cup, a contact between the scorers, then surprisingly Zidane headbutted Materazzi. We can say that this moment stole the lights from the tournament itself and don't forget it was Zidane's last match so the fact that red card was the last moment of his career added more drama to the story.

What did Materazzi say to Zidane?

Many rumors claimed that the Italian defender insulted Zidane's mother, but he recently revealed this is not true, explaining that his mother died when he was young, so he was not to insult the French's mother.

“My mother died when I was 15, I would never have insulted his”, So what actually happened?

That Zidane headbutt reason is Materazzi's abusive talk about the French's sister,
Here's the full story:

Marcello Lippi (Italy's couch) told Materazzi to mark Zizou, the Italian tried to stop him from the back.

Zinedine: I'll give you my shirt later.
Marco: I'd rather your sister.
Zidane lost his temper ended up with hitting his chest, at first the referee didn't see it but he got help from the fourth referee who saw it, also Gianluigi Buffon (Italy's goal keeper) admitted he was one of those who denounced Zinedine to the referee, some seconds after red card was shown in his face.

Many people believe that's probably why he didn't win ballon d'or in the same year instead of Fabio Cannavaro, others think if he didn't get that red card France probably was going to win world cup for their second time.

Later Zidane said “I'm not proud of what I did but it's a part of my career and I have to accept it”

Interestingly, this wasn't the only incident for both of them, let's start with Materazzi, he was known for his aggressive performance and trash talking other players in serie A when he played for inter Milan he himself admitted these kind of talk happen a lot during games, we also can't forget when he caused a horrible injury for Zlatan in the same year, the Swedish took revenge seriously waiting for four years to injury him back by a taekwondo move.

Now time to talk about Zidane headbutt but this time not that one in the world cup 2006 but the UEFA champions league against Hamburg player Jochen Kientz in 2000 the Frenchman was sent off and banned for 5 matches due to his "headbutt", he could've won ballon d'or that year too, Apparently it was easy to anger him.

Both of them were great players who were honoured to win such great titles like world cup, champions League, domestic cups and individual awards. We may have different opinions about them, but no one can deny that "Zidane headbutt Materazzi" is a memorable moment in the history of football.
